Identification of
 Blaupunkt Radios for 356 Porsches!

 


The purpose of this website is to enable, as much as is possible, the proper identification of Blaupunkt radios that were available as factory accessories on 356 Porsches! There were many versions of Blaupunkt auto radios during the 50's and 60's. Only certain models were available as factory accessories for 356 Porsches. Blaupunkt radios came with a variety of faceplates and knob designs for the various cars in which they were installed. Various model cars had different face plates and knobs. And there were various colors for the knobs and push buttons. Not all of the radios shown below are documented to have come from 356 Porsches, but they represent the model radios that were available for 356 Porsches. Below is a listing of factory accessory Blaupunkt radios as described in the factory accessory catalogs from 1956 to 1965. Further below are pictures identifying the various Blaupunkt radios available for 356 Porsches.

It should be said that the radio that is in your 356 Porsche could have come from a variety of sources including as a factory accessory. It could also have been a dealer added accessory, or a radio installed by a prior owner somewhere along the line. And it should also be mentioned that the factory would put most any available radio in a car as a special order if the buyer had the cash. The factory did offer certain Blaupunkt radios as regularly offered accessories. A list of these radios follows. A Kardex or Certificate of Originality will tell the tale!

The easiest way to identify a Blaupunkt radio from the 50's and 60's is to look at the paper tag usually attached to the right side of the radio. The tag tells you the model of the Radio, i.e. Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Koln, Bremen, or others, the serial number of the radio beginning with a letter, and whether or not it is transistorized. The letter tells the year/years of manufacture, see the listing below. Here are some examples of the paper identification tage.

US Version Blaupunkt Radios have an FM band of 88-108 MHz, compared to Euro FM band of 88-100 MHz. 

Blaupunkt Radio Wave "Bands" AM/FM/M/SW, etc.

The following is an explanation of the various wave "bands" found on Blaupunkt radios, both US versions and European versions.

1. US Band "AM"  =  Euro Band "AM", "M", or "Mittel"  Frequency 520-1640 Khz, used for Commercial.

2. US Band "FM"  =  Euro Band "U",  or "UKW" Frequency 87-104 MHz  (87-108 US), used for Commercial.

3. US Band "LW"  =  Euro Band "L", "LW", or "Langwelle" Frequency 150-340 Khz, Commercial/Aviation/Weather.

4. US Band "MB"  =  Euro Band "MB", Frequency 2-2.8 Mgz, used for Marine.

5. US Band "SW"  =  Euro Band "K",  or "Kurz" Frequency Various, used for Short Wave. 

As can be seem from the above, Blaupunkt radios came with one or more different frequency bands. The basic one-band radio came with the AM band. The next step was usually AM/FM. A common third band was LW (long wave) or SW (shortwave). In Europe, the LW band is for commercial broadcasts, however in the US, the LW band is used for aviation and weather broadcasts. European version radios are marked with the Euro band designators (M, U, L, MB or K), found on the push buttons.

You can tell when your radio was manufactured by looking at the serial number, which is printed on a paper tag attached to the side of the radio. Blaupunkt serial numbers begin with a letter, and it is this letter which tells you the year of manufacture!

This is not a complete listing of Blaupunkt Radios originally available for 356 Porsches. Individual radios are added to this list as information and photos of the radios become available. The following pictures were obtained from a wide variety of sources including individuals and sale auction listings on Ebay. Only pictures of identifiable radios based on their paper serial number tags have been used to insure the identifications are correct. In addition to the paper tags on the side of the radio which give positive identification to a particular radio, identification can sometimes be aided when a paper tag is not available by the physical characteristics of the radio including such characteristics as case design, dial face design/color, faceplate design, exterior transistors, accessory plugs, push buttons, and even the design of holes drilled in the case. The pictures shown below can help identify a radio that is minus it's paper serial number tag. All the Blaupunkt Radios shown below will fit in a 1956 or later 356 Porsche.
