 Porsche 356

Price Lists!

1950-1965

Everyone knows pretty much what their 356 Porsche is worth today, but many have no idea what it cost new. To find out, I have accumulated a collection of factory price lists, published at various times during the 356 production run. These price lists are shown below. If you have a factory price list in your collection that is not shown here, send me a jpeg image and I'll add it to this website for all to see, credits given, of course!

356 Pre-A

1952

The above British Price List is undated and probably from 1952, based on the engines mentioned. Prices are listed in British pounds. Included is an interesting statement: "Now available in Great Britain to members of the United States forces, foreign Diplomatic Corps, and overseas visitors." The graphics on both sides of this black and white price list show show a split-window coupe.

Undated,
estimated
1953

The Exchange Rate Dollar to DM during the early 1950's was 4.2 DM to $1. So divide any of the DM prices in the above price list to obtain the dollar equivalent. For example, a 1500S Cabriolet sold for 15,800DM or $3,762.00!

Pre-A Engines

The following table shows the engine sizes that were available, by year, in the period 1950-1955. Since many of the price lists shown below are not dated, one way to estimate their dates is to see what engine sizes were quoted in each price list.

1953

The price list for Hoffman Motor Cars of New York in 1953, listed the 1500 Super Cabriolet (equipped with radio, tachometer, special bumpers, and Seat regulator) at $4,584. Later versions of this price card have been seen as late as 1961. What is "Overdrive" in the last sentence of the front of the card?

1953

The price list for Cosmopolitan Cars Ltd., a Porsche distributor in Toronto, Canada listed the 1500 Super Cabriolet in 1953 , with the same special features, at $4,495 (according to the corrected figure shown above). What is "Overdrive"?

Dated
December
1954

Unlike the earlier version of this price list, this English language version is dated December 1954. Included with the prices for Coupes and Cabriolets with the various engine options, are separate prices for single uncrated engines.

1954

The price list for Hoffman Motor Car Company, a Porsche distributor in New York City, listed the 1500 Super Cabriolet in 1954, with the same special features, at $4,284. What is "Overdrive"?

This Price List, written
in English,
is for a Porsche

dealer in Kaiserslautern,
Germany.
The fact that it is
in English suggests that it
was intended for American
servicemen in Germany at
the time.
The price list is not
dated, but it includes the

Speedster, and the 1600
engine
which suggests that
the
price list is from late
1954 or early 1955.

Porsche Speedster Carrera GS 1500 - $6,000

Price List dated December 1954, contributed by Allyn Erickson Los Gatos, California!

Here is a typed Dealer price listed from Competition Motors, Hollywood, California dated December 1954! Prices are quoted for Speedsters, and Continential Coupes and Cabriolets! Also included are some interesting accessory listings, like an "oil filter" for Speedsters only - $16.00US, "aluminum wheel discs" (assume these are the finned aluminum wheel discs) - $48.00US, and "clock for glove compartment" - $16.00US! Notice the Speedster color combinations on page 2, paint color, interior color, and top color!

1955   A later price list from
Hoffman-Porsche Car
Corp. for 1955. Prices
are shown for
Coupe,
Cabriolet & Speedster!
(from the collection of

Anthony West, of Basel,
Switzerla
nd).

 1955

This Hoffman Porsche Car Corp price list is dated April 1955 and features the "Type 356 Continentals", coupe and cabriolet, along with the Speedster. Interestingly, only 1500 engines are mentioned in the brochure. A Type 356 Continental Cabriolet with a 1500 Super 70 hp engine sold for $3,332. A type 356 Speedster with a 1500 engine 55 hp sold for $2,550. This brochure also touts Porsche's Vacation Delivery Plan. Take a vacation in Europe, and pick up your new 356 in any major city for a small delivery charge. The brochure says: "Act Soon! Orders are pouring in, and the vacation season has already begun!

356-A

Above is an early 356-A price list showing a price for the Spyder Type 550 1500 RS, 110 hp at $6,000. I'll take several. The Speedster 1500 GS Carrera with 100 hp is listed for $3,817. The design and layout of this price list is almost the same as the one from 1953.

This is another Tourist Delivery
Plan Price List,
actually a 4 page
folder listing prices, and locations
of Porsche dealers throughout
Europe.
The cover picture of this
brochure, above left, is also found
in one of the early Christophoris
magazines.
It was common for
images to appear both in the
magazine and in sales literature
pieces.
